A swirl of color, music, costumes, and crowds, Mardi Gras is the last day before the start of Lent. This year it falls on February 21, 2012. Each of the countries that celebrates Mardi Gras does it in an inimitable way, blending its culture and traditions into the event's parades and revelry. In many places Mardi Gras (literally "Fat Tuesday") is part of an extended celebration known as Carnival.
Magical, mystical Venice becomes masked Venice during Carnival — as it has for some seven centuries. Behind ornate masks of feathers, gesso, leather, and gold leaf, commoners and high society meet, mingle, and have been known to cavort disguised during the forty days leading up to Easter. A jury of fashion cognoscenti convenes to vote on the best mask. Events unique to Venice's Carnival include a silent water parade and "Flight of the Angel," where a brave celeb descends on a rope from the San Marco bell tower to the middle of the square.
