A swirl of color, music, costumes, and crowds, Mardi Gras is the last day before the start of Lent. This year it falls on February 21, 2012. Each of the countries that celebrates Mardi Gras does it in an inimitable way, blending its culture and traditions into the event's parades and revelry. In many places Mardi Gras (literally "Fat Tuesday") is part of an extended celebration known as Carnival.
Catholic Mexico celebrates Mardi Gras 2012 in many locations: Veracruz, Merida, Campeche, Ensenada, and Cozumel among them. But the biggest Carnival in Mexico 2012 is in Mazatlan. For more than a century celebrants have made their way here, and the sunny beaches make a lovely backdrop. The five-day-long holiday is both culturally and family oriented, with scores of events to interest different tastes. The drumlike tambora beats the rhythm of the days that include the crowning of a young and dressed-to-the-nines king and queen who ride a flower-bedecked float and wave at their subjects. Long after those kids are tucked in, the revelry continues with strolling mariachis entertaining patrons in bars and restaurants that overflow with locals and visitors alike.
