A swirl of color, music, costumes, and crowds, Mardi Gras is the last day before the start of Lent. This year it falls on February 21, 2012. Each of the countries that celebrates Mardi Gras does it in an inimitable way, blending its culture and traditions into the event's parades and revelry. In many places Mardi Gras (literally "Fat Tuesday") is part of an extended celebration known as Carnival.
Many Caribbean countries celebrate Mardi Gras in 2012. Among them: Aruba, Curaçao, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. Although life for most people in those places continues at a normal pace during Carnival, on the sister islands of Trinidad and Tobago everyone gets in the spirit. Dancers in flamboyant costumes festooned with sequins and feathers move to the sounds of steel drum, calypso, and soca music. While the T&T Carnival certainly has its dionysian moments, they're tempered by the sweet Children's Carnival that takes place in Port of Spain on the Friday before Ash Wednesday.
