She started volunteering at age 10 and has managed a multi-national volunteer staff since age 19. Hundreds of travel companies have sprung up that offer people the chance to spend a few weeks building chicken coops in Ecuador or teaching sewing to women's associations in Kenya. These trips often costs many thousands of dollars, most of which goes towards overhead and not to the organizations and individuals in need of assistance.

I hate New Years resolutions. Any decision for self-betterment that is prompted by a glass of champaign and a tick on the clock is elementally unsustainable. Plus, New Years resolutions make us feel bad because we cannot accomplish the laundry list of things we want to fix about ourselves. Looking like Beyonce and being a serious contender for a Nobel Prize are perhaps out of the range of possible, at least in one year's time.
