Voluntourism

It sounds appealing… a chance to travel and a chance to give back at the same time. But how much of a difference does voluntourism make? Hundreds of travel companies have sprung up that offer people the chance to spend a few weeks building chicken coops in Ecuador or teaching sewing to women's associations in Kenya. These trips often costs many thousands of dollars, most of which goes towards overhead and not to the organizations and individuals in need of assistance.
