Traveling by Myself

I can’t wait. I think….

Solo travel in New York City. What's not to love?

Now, this may not seem like a big deal, but with four kids, a husband, parents and great friends – I never really get the opportunity to travel alone.

And when I meet a new friend and they find out what I go to New York for (Fashion Week) the first thing they say: "Take me!"

I've taken friends and family to New York for years. My two best girlfriends and I make it an annual trek. I had my mother with me at the fashion shows during 9/11. A few years after that I decided to bring my then-baby along to New York for Fashion Week (not my best idea…)

But next week I'm going by myself. OK, not totally by myself. I've got fashion friends who will also be at Fashion Week that I'll likely meet up with.

For the first time in years, however, my NY trip will be my own. I will decide where to eat. When to go to bed. And where I want to shop.

I've traveled extensively by myself (I used to be a fashion buyer) so I know that part of the allure of solitary travel is mostly the idea of all that freedom.  I love thinking about all the wonderful things I can do on my own: Spa! Shopping! Napping!

Of course, in reality, I will probably be bored being by myself by the end of the first day – staring at the walls — wishing that I'd brought someone along...
