Madonna clutches Golden Globe award for Best Song, "Masterpiece"

The Golden Globes awards show is truly the crack cocaine of television programming — a show so utterly devoid of meaning when it comes to merit that one feels sullied even watching it at all. But I did have to see how far Ricky Gervais would go in his attempts to insult the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and was actually a little disappointed that he got so little screen-time to do so!

Gervais did manage to get in a few choice zingers, describing Boardwalk Empire as being "about a load of immigrants who came to America about 100 years ago, got involved in bribery and corruption and worked their way up into high society — but enough about the Hollywood Foreign Press."

That's a good joke because it has more than a grain of truth to it. While everyone in the industry knows that award shows in general are subject to much politicking, influence-peddling and even out and out bribery (including the Oscars and the Grammys!), the Golden Globes are particularly specious because of the small amount of voters and the fealty they owe to the studios for access, favors and gift-bag swag.

How else to explain the award given to Madonna last night for best song? As if she didn't make it plain enough in her self-congratulatory acceptance speech, the song Masterpiece is from the film she recently directed, W.E., which has been ripped to shreds by critics. As if anybody cared, she went into a longwinded story about how her manager harangued her into writing the insipid tune. "And I said, please Guy, I'm trying to focus on being a director and I want people to be able to pay attention to the film."

Wow. Does she really think her lousy song would make people jump out of their theater seats and start a sing-and-dance-along, and risk missing three minutes of her precious film? "So then I finished the film," she continued as the audience of celebs squirmed uncomfortably, "and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged."

I will let you judge for yourselves how trophy-worthy her miraculous ditty panned out. For my money, it is one of the most sophomoric lyrics ever written, and the music actually sounds like it owes a debt to Lady Gaga, whom Madonna recently accused of being a pale imitation of herself! For the record, let's remember that Madonna is a passable singer and dancer with admirably consummate marketing skills, not a skilled musician and songwriter like Ms. Gaga. As for her award, she can thank Harvey Weinstein for being in her corner — the song itself is a real stinker.

Maybe it's because english is not my primary language and you what's your excuse ? By the way FYI Your video is being played on french music TV channel in the top 20 worst videos of the 90's and maybe you did not ask Madonna twice yourself but someone did hence her version ended in the hands of Steve Hurley to be remixed for the compilation and that's how it got leaked.

The author is clearly delusional and one-sided. Reading the comments, now I know why he has a bone to pick. Lame. To say "Masterpiece" owes anything to Gaga, give me a break. What kind of daft argument is that? Have you heard any of Madonna's ballads in the '80s and '90s? Madonna never said Gaga was a pale imitation of herself, don't put words in her mouth merely to support your weak article.

Madonna has a song called Time Stood Still on the soundtrack for The Next Best Thing that was never released as a single but is considered by her fanbase as one of her best ballads. It was also recorded with William Orbit. Masterpiece owes "a debt" to Time Stood Still, if Lady Gaga has a song that sounds like this (!!?) then Time Stood Still must have been "insperation" for her.

In the early 80's Madonna recorded a song "Shake your head" with David's band Was not Was but was replaced by the then more famous Ozzy Osbourne. When madonna was riding on the success of her Blond Ambition tour in the early 90's Was not was came back to her hoping to profit from her success and asked her the permission to release her version of the song which she refused so they made a version with Kim Basinger which was an embarasment to both parties. In the early 00's when Madonna was again glooming in the successes of "Ray of light" and "Music" Was not Was asked her again the permission to release her version of the song on the best of they wanted to release on Ze records so they could gain media exposure and interest in it. She refused again. Today David is a blogging his bitterness towards someone who saw clear in his attempt to profit from her.

Almost true! Except that the "embarrassing" version with Kim and Ozzy went Top 10 around Europe and Asia and dominated the dance charts as well. We never looked back, nor did we ask Madge for permission to re-release her version in 2000 or whenever — we'd already had a huge hit with the song.

P.S., what does "glooming in the successes" mean exactly? Sounds like English, but....

Thanks for troubling to write!!

In the early 80's Madonna then unknown recorded a song with David Was "Shake your head" but she was replaced by the then more popular Ozzy Osbourne. Her version was kept in the vault until the early 90's when she was the biggest star so David Was ready to cash in her fame asked her to release the song but she refused. Kim Basinger re-recorde the song which was an embarassment for both Was and Basinger because it's really bad. When Z records offered Was not Was to release a best of in the early 00's when Madonna was again very popular with her "Ray of light" and "Music" albums, they asked her if she was ok if they included a remixed version of her take of the song on the album to give it some interest. Again she refused. Today David Was is as sour as Elton John and it does not look good. When was the last time you had a hit David ?
